5Zine WORKSHOPS!
Whatcha Mean What's a Zine? Excerpted from The Book of Zines "Zines (pronounced "zeens," from fanzines) are cut-and-paste, ‘sorry this is late,’ self-published magazines reproduced at Kinko's or on the sly at work and distributed through mail order and word of mouth. They touch on sex, music, politics, television, movies, work, food, whatever. They're Tinkertoys for malcontents. They're obsessed with obsession. They're extraordinary and ordinary. They're about strangeness but since it's usually happening somewhere else you're kind of relieved. You can get to know people pretty well through their zines, which are always more personal and idiosyncratic than glossy magazines because glossies and the celebrities they worship are so busy being well known." --Chip Rowe Zines are also the perfect jumping-off point to self-publishing. The idea that inspired me to start my Greenwoman zine (before the traditional-style magazines and books) was simply this: “Get your writing work out there--do it yourself! Make a zine!" Zines are a fun, before-publishing-was-computer-generated, hands-on way to take your writing and art and get it out into the world! Our zine workshops are tailored to specific age groups, interests, and needs. (Go to Contact Page to contact Sandra about any of the zine classes.) Make a Zine from Start to Finish (3 2-hour classes, meeting once weekly) Minimum 6 participants - $75/participant In this class, held over 3 two-hour sessions, we'll learn about self-published magazines and make a zine from start to finish. First Session - Intro to zines. Includes learning about zines through watching a documentary about zines in the Northwest and exploring different types and styles of zines. 2nd Session - Creating your zine. By this time you should have the idea for your zine, and have the "copy" (written content), and images to use. This time will be spent in discussing how to put zines together, working out any issues with design and layout, construction, binding, fine-tuning. 3rd Session - We'll share our zines and discuss marketing and distributing your zine.
